Most of my friends and people who follow me on social media hear me talk ad nausem about pH balance in our bodies. Knowing a bit about acidic foods or the alkaline diet goes a long way to better internal health. The Standard American Diet is very acidic to the body, so I try to over-emphasize the alkaline side of it in my food products. It is so important in how I make my sodas and kombucha, that I often compare it to the health of our bodies. What is the best way to think about it's importance? Dr. Gary Tunsky put it this way. "Think of your body as a fish tank. Imagine the importance
of maintaining the integrity of the internal fluids of the body that we swim in daily. Imagine the fish in this tank are your cells and organ systems bathing in the fluids, which transport food and remove waste.
Now imagine I back up my car and put the tailpipe up against the air intake filter supplying oxygen to the water in the tank. The water becomes filled with carbon monoxide lowering the pH, creating and acidic environment and threatening the health of the (fish), (your cells and organs). What if! throw in too much food or the wrong kind of food and the fish are unable to consume or digest it all and the food starts to decompose and putrefy? Toxic waste chemicals build up as the food breaks down, creating more acidic by-products, altering the optimal pH. This is a small example of what we are doing to our internal fluids daily, some of us more than others. We are polluting our internal fluids with acidic toxins like nicotine, drugs, excessive intake of acid forming foods, acidic beverages and social drugs such as coffee, carbonated beverages and alcohol, which all compromise the delicate balance of pH that maintains homeostasis. Some of us have fish tanks (bodies) that are barely able to support life, yet we somehow manage to struggle from day to day manifesting severe imbalances until there is the inevitable crash and debilitating chronic, disturbing, and diseased symptomology to deal with a life-threatening illness in a hospital somewhere." Once you begin to see your body as a unique filtering system, you begin to realize the importance of what you ingest, consume, eat, digest, and breath. Is it time to change the filter in your house? Bonus: The first step to internal change and installing a proper pH balance inside you is to take count of those things that may be creating a toxic environment in your body.... pills and supplements. I've recently wrote 8 reasons why it shouldn't necessarily be in the form of a pill and some out-of-the-ordinary substitutes. (You can download the 8 reasons why). Hi Jared, just came across your site today and I thoroughly enjoyed your article about PH balance. I'm 60 and somewhat of a health advocate, at least I'd like to believe. I've always taken decent care of myself, going back to my teen years in the mid 70's when my sister and husband were first starting their own Natural Foods business. She is 14 years older that I (guess mom/dad waited a while for me, huh...LOL) and i always looked up to her, so at that time I started taking some vitamin supplements, you know the usual Multi, C & E, at least that was it for that time. I learned a lot about supplements as I grew. I was very active playing baseball and skiing in my younger years, and I always tried to take good care of myself. One of the main reasons was that my dad died of a massive heart attack when he was only 50, and I was 9 in 1969. My sister had gotten married in 1967. It was life changing for me as I grew up without a dad and became very close to my brother-in-law who became like a dad to me over the years. Anyhow, as I grew older I learned more and more about vitamins and supplements and probably like most people tried so many different brands and types. It really wasn't until I was about 35 that I started to lose a lot of faith in conventional medicine, primarily due to my DR at that time trying to diagnose and treat a bad nasal/head congestion that I had. After about 30 days of 3 different antibiotics, Flonase, Antihistamines and such, that did absolutely NOTHING for me, I swore i would never go back to a DR again and let them prescribe ANY meds for me. It just so happened that after those 30 days of unsuccessful treatment, I ended up getting TINITUS in my left ear. And that was in 2000, and I did some research online, only to find that LOTS of antibiotics had one of their first side effects as "ringing in the ears" or TINITUS. So again, that was it for me, no more meds, and since 2000 when I was 39, I have NOT taken any type of meds and I am extremely proud of that. I do have some arthritic issues as a result of my younger days playing baseball (catcher) and skiing, but I have managed to work through a lot of that by eating right and taking care of myself Naturally through alternative means. Over the years I took it upon myself to learn a lot about Naturlal health and ways to keep healthy. For the past 15 years I have been taking Spirulina, and Vit D3 and that seemed to work very good for me as I got plenty of nutritional supplementation from that, along with trying to eat as good as possible and of course some exercising (Biking/Spin, weight training). I found that Spirulina has SO MANY nutrients in it and really all you need to take if you want to supplement with a natural product. I just added the D3 because of all the extra hype it got over the past 10+ years. And now during COVID, I also added 2000mg of good quality Vit C. And only the past 7 years have I learned about Probiotics. I started eating Greek yogurt (FAGE) everyday, thinking it would supply with some decent probiotics, but I think after about 2 years of eating that I started to realize that it was really not helping me that much, and found Kombucha. I have been drinking GT's Kombucha for about 5 years now and I believe it truly has changed my gut health completely for the better. I drink about 4-6oz about 5 days/week. In the beginning when I started I understood that was all you really needed on a daily basis if you were healthy with a decent immune system, and if you were not healthy or immuno-compromised to drink more daily. So between that, my Spirulina, D3 and C, along with watching my food intake, and leaning toward a more Mediterranean diet, and also incorporating some good quality liquid herbs (Oil of Oregano, Turmeric, Echinacea/Golden Seal) I have managed to stay "very healthy" and free from even the common cold. If I feel anything coming on, or if one of my colleagues in my office has a cold, I start my Oil of Oregano regiment, about 4-5 drops every few hours for a few days, and then just do maintenance all the time. I also drink a good quality Green Tea (Matcha), and try to limit any coffee, usually black only to once or twice a week. I know its too acidic and have been told by various people, especially a Chinese Tea person, that Coffee is one of the first things you should STOP drinking. So all in all, and through my diet and nutritional supplementation that seems to work pretty well for me, I am leaning how to balance my own PH by maintaining proper gut health. I try telling everyone that proper gut health is one of the biggest keys to staying healthy, as our gut is out "first line of defense" when it comes to digestion and absorbing nutrients efficiently, and then supplying our bodies with the essential energy to sustain itself.
