How The Vagus Nerve Can Help Depression
Why is stimulating the vagus nerve a new component of better mental health? Is this why psychobiotics and the vagus nerve the new health frontier? It seems more treatments of brain disorders can begin in the gut.
In a previous podcast, I explained a new term and really, a “new” type of probiotics that many hadn't heard of before. That term being, “Psychobiotics”. Without going down a rabbit hole or creating a lengthy article, psychobiotics are what you might think of as probiotics, but they perform so much more than the normal gut bacteria we have.
In fact, what they do specifically might be the new way to treat some forms of mental illness such as depression and anxiety.
So what do they do differently? They are in constant communication with the brain with those neurons traveling up and down the vagus nerve. In a study done by a professor of psychiatry, he compared 2 mice, one with a severed vagus nerve and one with a healthy pathway and then gave them a species type of probiotics. What he found was that the mouse with a fully functioning vagus nerve and the probiotics showed reduced signs of stress, anxiety, and depression, whereas the other mice (that had an improperly functioning vague nerve) showed none. Is there a correlation? Although research is in its infancy stages, if you are believing in the strong relationship between your gut and your brain, as you begin to understand and possibly address any mental related stressors you have, you might want to look at educating yourself on psychobiotics as well. Once you do, you might address why psychobiotics can help depression and how the vagus nerve, in particular, can help improve the changes of depression. Doing so, there will be a greater chance that taking probiotics for mental health and wellbeing will be the new frontier of science.
