Antibiotics Don't Work On Viruses
A large reason why I enjoy and have a passion for gut health is because for many, it is a new frontier to look at how to become healthy. Looking at your digestion and microbiome is something "out-of-the-ordinary" and not your typical, "eat broccoli, exercise, get sleep" mantra that you see all over social media. This different approach compelled me to talk about antibiotics. ⠀
Let's start out by saying you're a mayor of a small town, enjoying life and everything is going great. Then let's pretend there are a rash of burglaries at some resident's homes. How would you react and what would you do as mayor? The first step would be get the police to investigate and talk to neighbors that might have seen something, the key word being "investigate". But what would happen if you unilaterally decided to throw everyone in your town in jail? ⠀(To continue reading, listen to, or download the podcast, follow the link).
You know that's not the best way to solve the problem. You may actually eliminate the people who are doing the damage, you are also getting rid of the other 98% who are productive citizens. So why do I use this illustration? It's the way I'd love for you to think about what happens to your body when you take antibiotics to solve a "problem".⠀
⠀ Doctors prescribe an antibiotic when you're sick (even though in many instances the issue may not be bacterial at all), and most don't do a lot of "investigating". Taking an antibiotic is simply "throwing your gut in jail". Again, you might eliminate the problem (bad bacteria), but you're also eliminating the majority of the defenders of your town (good bacteria) too. ⠀ Additionally, as mayor, if you threw everyone in jail, the question would become, "who will be living in my town now?" With no one there, the possibilities of it being overrun with people who aren't concerned about it's well-being, or worse, having it become a deserted wasteland is amplified. So before you take an antibiotic, do your research, and if you decide to take it, make sure you re-populate your "town" with the good peeps as well.
