Nutrition Guidelines Don't Apply To You
Have you ever wonder why nutrition is wrong or that the information you find on the internet doesn't apply to you? The biggest mistakes of nutrition facts is exactly that: not everything you read applies to you.
I'd really like to begin a discussion about the generalization, or really the oversimplification of the dietary guidelines find on the interwebs today. The biggest fallacy known to mankind is thinking that the nutritional information that you hear about or read about applies 100 percent to you. Rarely, if ever, it does, and it's a good starting point, it's never a good ending point because we're all completely different.
I Googled "How much Vitamin D do I need a day?", and the first article came back and said based on my age, I think, I should be taking an additional five micro grams every single day. Didn't ask me what I ate, how I ate, whether I was active, whether I was outside.
The point is that five micrograms was the average amount that the average person should be taking in order to stave off any sort of future illness for me. Our starting point should always be, we're not getting enough nutrients from the foods that we eat. Our nutrition from the foods that we eat is not that great. So instead of asking how much more Vitamin D I should be taking, the question should be how much more Vitamin D should you be getting from the foods that you already eat, that's the trick. In this episode of The Mental Minute, I explain why there are so many mistakes found in nutrition "facts" or on nutrition labels. The bottom line is that the nutritional guidelines generally don't apply to you. Here's why.
