Is Serotonin Involved In Digestion?
What are neurotransmitters and what do they do? They can help to regulate many functions of the body, but most can't name 4 specific neurotransmitters. This is unfortunate because a healthy gut can work together with neurotransmitters to produce happiness or naturally produce those happy feelings normally sought after through the taking of pharmaceutical drugs.
If the term psychobiotic is new to you, I encourage you to listen to several of my previous blogs or podcasts to get caught up. In a nutshell, I touched on how certain gut bacteria can help arrange neurotransmitters in our brain to be naturally produced.
Neurotransmitters are chemicals that our brains use to transport brain waves and other messages from cell to cell. They are also produced in our gut and using that same process, can regulate digestion without needing to have the brain tell it what to do.
But when it comes to your mood and mood disorders, our gut microbiota can manufacture important other neurotransmitters like serotonin, gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), dopamine, acetylcholine, and norepinephrine, which when produced in sufficient quantities, can help to balance our moods. In fact, over 90% of your serotonin and 50% of your dopamine are in your gut. So how do you remember the neurotransmitters and their functions and which ones are important for the health of your brain? Looking at how most of them like serotonin is also involved in digestion, so studying and knowing how a good digestive tract can help to better regulate them is key. Neurotransmitters and gut hormones synergistically work for your overall health. The bottom line? Get working on that gut balance, folks.
