The Delicate Balance Of Thinking And Probiotics
What exactly is healthy thinking? Is it simply thinking healthy or is it understanding how to walk the fine line of good gut health and good thoughts?
Before we answer that, we should look at how probiotics serve as the foundation from which your brain grows efficiently and how that good bacteria can serve as a protector for your brain as well. Once you understand the relationship between your brain (mental health) and your gut microbiome, you can see how important they are to the other.
Bacteria found in the gut has been shown to increase the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is essential to the creation of new brain cells, regulating glucose, and the regulation (and ultimate suppression of) brain-related disorders, like depression and Alzheimer's. It's important to note this research has only been done on lab animals and not in humans, but based on the initial findings, the signs are promising and will eventually find its way to human trials.
In addition, two popular bacteria, Lactobacilli, and bifidobacteria have been shown to reduce the effects of oxidation in our brains caused by oxygen-carrying free radicals that cause many issues around our bodies, and since the brain is one of the biggest users of our breathable oxygen, it can be especially prone to harmful effects of them. In addition, a high count of good bacteria eliminate toxins called lipopolysaccharides (LPS) that are caused by free radicals. These unique toxins lower dopamine, serotonin, and cause inflammation, so anything that can be done to decrease the likelihood of them causing damage should be looked at in greater detail. Knowing all this, can healthy thinking start in your gut? Because of the delicate balance of thinking (i.e. brain health) and probiotics, it's important to enhance the relationship between brain health and your gut.
