Sunlight Exposure And Depression
Does sunlight help with depression? Many enjoy being outside but does it have medical benefits? There is sunlight and depression research to be explored.
Understanding how our mental state can be negatively affected by many things is the first step in addressing depression and anxiety. But are there more natural approaches to addressing it other than medications, pills, or prescriptions? Although these are the default, there are several other methods that have been used for hundreds of centuries.
From an evolutionary perspective, we have evolved from living outside to being indoors a large portion of the day. It has only been within the last several thousand years that we actually have moved “indoors”. If someone has anxiety or in the beginning stages of depression and simply took some time to get outside under trees (what is called forest bathing), they'd find their stress hormones, blood pressure, pulse & heart rate decrease compared to the results of their health living a majority of time inside a city location.
You might not realize it, but sunlight helps you to relax and decrease stress hormones because of the release of endorphins that do so much for our long-term health. Going even further, if you suffer from depression or SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), sunlight can improve the use of dopamine in your body which the levels are generally low in people that have the characteristics of mood disorders. The bottom line is to get outside under the sun and read this article. The effect of sunlight on mood disorders is one that is only positive. Sunlight exposure has been show to reduce the chances and effects of depression and studies are backing that up.
