Why Probiotics Are Important
7 Signs You Should Be Taking Steps To Improve Gut Health
(taken from http://www.healthy-holistic-living.com/7-signs-you-should-be-taking-probiotics.html)
It's important to remember that 70-80% of your immune system is in your gut. Your brain is made of the same type of tissue as your digestive tract; it actually is your “2nd brain”. This gives more significance to the phrase, “You are what you eat.”
I've included below several signs that indicate you may want to begin focusing on including more probiotics in your diet. If you have experienced any of these things within the past year or so, I would certainly recommend you consider strengthening your gut:
- Antibiotics: Did you know antibiotics completely destroy health gut bacteria?
- Food poisoning: Taking probiotics regularly gives the body a better defense against any foreign invaders you may come into contact with.
- Digestive disturbances
- Skin conditions: Our external environment is a direct reflection of our internal environment, which includes rashes, acne, rosacea, eczema, etc.
- Mood disorders: As mentioned above, the gut and brain are 'siblings'. The integrity of your gut has a huge effect on the function of your neurotransmitters. There has even been significant research showing a strong correlation between Autism and probiotics.
- Weak immune system: Healthy bacteria can train your immune system to distinguish between “foreign” microbes and those coming from your own body. This makes probiotics the best line against infection.
- Yeast overgrowth: This is more than 'yeast infections' (talking to you, guys). Belly bloat, sugar and carb cravings, and gas can be caused by an unchecked overgrowth of yeast.
Moral of the story: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria. My philosophy has always been to put as many good bacteria in and on your body as you could. This is what I call, The “Gunfight at the OK Corral” Theory, and your body is the town that is not big enough for both the good and bad bacteria (I'm a big Wild West fan). You want more “good” ones than “bad” ones in your “town”.
This, I believe, creates the healthiest body.
But the hardest part is finding that good quality bacteria.
And if you were anything like me in the beginning, you are probably overwhelmed as to where to get probiotics and have always naturally gravitated towards probiotic pills your doctor, friend, or kid at the health food store had recommended. But for me, this always led to more questions than answers:
What's the best probiotic?
Which bacteria strain do I need most?
How many CFUs? Wait, what's a CFU?
Does the most expensive mean it's the best? Can't I just buy this $10 bottle?
What are all these added ingredients? Silica? Magnesium Stearate?
Does it have to be refrigerated? What does shelf-stable mean?
How long do I have to take them? Or can I take them for a couple of weeks?
(As an added sidenote, I've written a paper on the 8 reasons why probiotic pills are not as good for your gut as what you might think... things Big Pharma doesn't want you to know. You can download it here).
I pulled my hair out trying to research the answers to these questions. And in the process of doing this tedious and often conflicting research, I ultimately just grabbed a jar of this one particular sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) a friend had recommended and tried eating a small spoonful a couple times a day.
Do you know what happened?... After about a week, I noticed that my stomach felt better than it had in a long time. Holy cow! For someone who had struggled for years with digestion problems, it felt amazing.
Now, fast forward this a year... I had proudly become (what my friends call me) a “Mad Scientist” and have turned my kitchen into a fermentor's idea of heaven. I make different kinds of sauerkraut, breads, yogurts, and vegetables as well as constantly trying out new flavors of my probiotic popsicles and sodas.
And over the years, I have noticed that I rarely (I tell my kids you can 'never say never') get sick. I have eliminated my digestion issues, don't take any vitamin supplements, eat whatever I choose to eat, and no longer drink my meals for nutrition. I am full of energy, and I believe it's all because I have given my body plenty of ways to naturally get healthy on the inside through the good bacteria found in probiotics.
